Kayla Gerrans still cannot believe she came close to needing a heart transplant just because she was pregnant.<\/p>\n

Only now \u201418 months after she collapsed with heart failure in a hospital carpark \u2014 can she talk about her brush with death when she developed rare pregnancy-induced heart failure.<\/p>\n

Mrs Gerrans, now 27, was 35 weeks pregnant when she struggled for breath in the carpark at King Edward Memorial Hospital as she arrived for a routine appointment.<\/p>\n

She was rushed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital\u2019s intensive care unit and put into an induced coma before doctors diagnosed peripartum cardiomyopathy. It is a rare form of heart failure that happens during the last month of pregnancy or in the first few months after giving birth.<\/p>\n

It causes the heart chambers to enlarge and the muscles weaken, leading to less blood flow and the heart being unable to meet the demands of the body\u2019s organs for oxygen.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a team from KEMH was called in to deliver her baby Luca, and even then she was not out of the woods.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very emotional when I first saw him, I was crying my eyes out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d never had heart problems or heard of pregnancy-induced heart failure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cure for the condition is usually delivering the baby but that wasn\u2019t the case for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mrs Gerrans was sent home on six medications and wearing a special heart vest with a built-in defibrillator that could kick in if her heart stopped working.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took about four months for my heart to recover to the point that it was considered to be in the safe zone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had no idea that in your 20s you could be diagnosed with heart failure and have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is helping WA\u2019s Heart Foundation raise awareness about the heart disease.<\/p>\n
