After practicing cardiology for nearly 30 years, I wish people literally wore their hearts on their sleeves, so they could see them and think more actively about maintaining them. But since your heart is buried deep in your chest, you may be unaware of some of the things you do to harm it.\u00a0<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding body-text--is-first is-standard\">Decades of research and public health campaigns have made pretty much everyone aware that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/basic_information\/health_effects\/heart_disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">smoking is bad for your heart<\/a>, but these other common habits may also be doing damage to your ticker.\u00a0<\/section>\n<section class=\"body-text font--body has-mobile-padding body-text--is-first is-standard\"><\/section>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\"><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You sit way too much<\/h3>\n<p>Prolonged sitting is now firmly associated with heart disease and premature aging of arteries. Basically, sitting is smoking. In a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acc.org\/about-acc\/press-releases\/2015\/03\/05\/16\/19\/study-bolsters-link-between-heart-disease-excessive-sitting?w_nav=S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0using heart CT scans and physical activity records of more than 2,000 adults, each hour of sitting per day was associated with a 14% increase in coronary artery calcification. Coronary calcification is a sign of damaged heart arteries, and can increase the risk of a heart attack.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/adjustable-standing-desk-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standing desks<\/a>, apps, and timers are all necessary tools in today&#8217;s sedentary society.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You don&#8217;t get quality sleep<\/h3>\n<p>Sleep is restorative, and your pillow is the best anti-aging pill. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3198203\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0of people sleeping poorly and getting less than six hours a night, compared to those sleeping soundly for seven hours, the risk of coronary heart disease (clogged arteries) was 79% higher! Get the highest-quality shut-eye possible by using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/what-is-mindfulness-the-benefits-of-mindfulness-meditation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness meditation<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/how-to-meditate-what-i-learned-from-meditating-for-365-days-straight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">smartphone apps<\/a>, or myriad other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/how-to-make-yourself-fall-asleep-faster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drug-free techniques<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You don&#8217;t work on spinal flexibility<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19182 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/herheart.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/pexels-photo-stretch-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"229\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>Yoga offers many benefits, but one of the most powerful is spinal<br \/>\nflexibility. Unknown to most are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19666849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a>\u00a0suggesting that flexibility of the spine correlates to flexibility of important arteries in the body. In other words, spinal flexibility is one sign of a healthy heart.<br \/>\nMy favorite practice for the spine is performing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJElLrpBetc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the five Tibetans<\/a>, akin to a yoga sequence, and which you can learn online through many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TJElLrpBetc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free video demonstrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You&#8217;re not sweating<\/h3>\n<p>Heavy metals like mercury and lead are particularly damaging t the heart and arteries, and unfortunately you may be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/is-tap-water-safe-to-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ingesting them without realizing it<\/a>. A practice of sweating &#8212; like regular exercise or hanging out in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/lifestyle\/new-york\/infrared-sauna-benefits-i-got-high-in-an-ir-sauna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">infrared sauna<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; can help eliminate them efficiently, according to many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22505948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You don&#8217;t have enough sex<\/h3>\n<p>Unless you lie perfectly still, most sexual encounters raise the heart rate and blood pressure significantly. Fortunately,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11812807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies<\/a>\u00a0show that the more frequently you have sex, the lower the risk of heart events. Get busy.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You drink too many sugary beverages<\/h3>\n<p>In a massive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27456347\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0of more than 300,000 subjects, more sugary drinks are associated with more strokes and heart attacks. This kind of association study doesn&#8217;t necessarily\u00a0<em>prove<\/em>\u00a0that your soda habit is killing your heart &#8212; it might be the cigarette and donut you have with it &#8212; but ditch the crap drinks and their friends for your health.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You drink diet soda instead of sugary beverages<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, the sugar-free &#8220;diet&#8221; options aren&#8217;t much better than their sugar-filled counterparts. Diet drinks probably\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.355.2133&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won&#8217;t help you lose weight<\/a>, and they could also do damage to your heart: A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/269637605_Diet_Drink_Consumption_and_the_Risk_of_Cardiovascular_Events_A_Report_from_the_Women%27s_Health_Initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a>\u00a0shows that women who drink two or more diet sodas a day have a major increase in heart disease and deaths. Water, unsweetened tea, green juice, and black coffee should be on your list.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You skip medical checkups and don&#8217;t get advanced lab work<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/herheart.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/blood-pressure-pressure-gauge-medical-the-test.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19191 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/herheart.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/blood-pressure-pressure-gauge-medical-the-test-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>You may be young and &#8220;invincible&#8221; now, but not even a healthy lifestyle can make you totally immune to heart disease. While lifestyle factors like diet, smoking, and exercise play the biggest roles in heart health, there are genetic factors that are an important minority.\u00a0See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/heart-attack-symptoms-prevention-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a health care provider<\/a>\u00a0to check your blood pressure, EKG for your QT interval, and lab work for fasting glucose, vitamin D level, cholesterol panel, lipoprotein a and homocysteine measurements, and an assessment of inflammation by a test called hd-CRP. If you&#8217;re over 40 with risks for heart disease, get a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/heart-attack-symptoms-prevention-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronary artery calcium scan<\/a>\u00a0and know your score. You may have an underlying condition that could affect heart health, and knowing where you stand can help inform the other lifestyle choices associated with heart health.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\"><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You ignore stress<\/h3>\n<p>Stress has been linked to heart disease for decades, and the constant connectivity of today&#8217;s technological landscape hasn&#8217;t made life more relaxing. Twenty-four\/seven isn&#8217;t just an empty promise &#8212; it&#8217;s a way of life for many young people.\u00a0But the stress and the adrenal fatigue that come with an &#8220;always on&#8221; lifestyle can age arteries fast. Learn a few\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thrillist.com\/health\/nation\/heart-attack-symptoms-prevention-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategies<\/a>\u00a0to manage stress that you can use on a daily basis to help you chill out.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body-text__paragraph-header font--h2\">You eat bacon, hot dogs, and pepperoni<\/h3>\n<p>The last year or so has been a rough one for processed red meats.
