Women especially can benefit from resistance training. From bone health to higher metabolism, there are myriad reasons to start strength training today.<\/p>\n<p>We asked Lisa Wheeler, fitness program director for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dailyburn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DailyBurn<\/a>, a leading online fitness destination, why it\u2019s so important for women to get into the weight room and how to get started.<\/p>\n<h5>Builds strong bones and slows bone loss<\/h5>\n<p>Stave off osteoporosis and maintain strong bones with weight-bearing exercise. \u201cBone is living tissue, which is constantly being absorbed and replaced,\u201d explains Wheeler. According to the Mayo Clinic, osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn&#8217;t keep up with the removal of old bone, causing loss of bone density over time. While this can affect men and women, post-menopausal women have the highest risk, meaning it\u2019s time to start resistance training if you haven\u2019t already. \u201cDiet, dietary supplements and exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise, can help stop or slow down the loss of bone density and build strong bones,&#8221; says Wheeler.<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"dfp-in-read-native\" class=\"ui-ad\" data-dfp-oop-ad-slot=\"content-belt-2\" data-target-name=\"pos\" data-target-value=\"btf,content-belt\">\u00a0Increased strength and higher metabolism<\/h5>\n<div class=\"two_column\">\n<p class=\"col1 float-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19168 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/herheart.org\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/woman-lifting-weights_pgyzlf-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"177\" \/>Like bone, muscles are active tissues, and women tend to lose 5 to 7 pounds of muscle every decade if they&#8217;re not doing some sort of strength training or weight-bearing exercise, explains Wheeler. \u201cDecreased muscle mass slows down metabolism, so to keep the calorie fires burning, women must maintain or increase lean muscle mass,\u201d she says. \u201cWhile aerobic exercise has many great health benefits, weight-bearing exercises are the key to strong muscles and a healthy metabolism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Improves glucose processing and lowers cholesterol<\/h5>\n<div class=\"two_column\">\n<p>Studies show that weight-bearing exercise can improve how the body absorbs glucose, which is key in preventing adult-onset diabetes, says Wheeler. \u201cIn addition, blood lipid profiles have shown significant improvements, with lower cholesterol levels after several weeks of strength training,\u201d she adds. \u201cThis can greatly reduce the chance of heart attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>Better brain function<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"custom_columns\">\n<div class=\"two_column\">\n<p class=\"col1 float-left\">Think strength training just means a better body? Think again. \u201cA new study conducted in British Columbia showed significant improvements in cognitive performance and brain function with older female participants who engaged in strength training programs,\u201d says Wheeler. This included improved problem solving, decision making and associative memory. \u201cWhile more testing needs to be conducted, this is a positive step toward slowing down the effects of Alzheimer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Improves overall health and wellness<\/h5>\n<p class=\"col2 float-left\">Even if you have yet to embrace resistance training, it\u2019s not too late. \u201cWomen are never too old or too young to start incorporating weight-bearing exercise into their lifestyle,\u201d says Wheeler. She cites a study published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Women and Aging<\/em>, where researchers found that 23 women who completed a resistance training program three or four days per week reported improved quality of life across all ages.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"col2 float-left\">How to get started<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Lift things:<\/strong> Lifting dumbbells, using resistance bands or simply lifting the grocery bags stimulates the formation of bone, says Wheeler. So any exercise that places force on a bone will strengthen that particular bone. She recommends two to three times a week for this type of total body resistance training.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Move your own body:<\/strong> You don\u2019t always have to use weights to get the body benefits of resistance training.
