{"id":5382,"date":"2016-06-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-19T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/herheart.org\/2016\/06\/20\/icelandic-gene-discovery-help-fight-heart-disease\/"},"modified":"2016-06-20T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-06-19T14:00:00","slug":"icelandic-gene-discovery-help-fight-heart-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/area54.thedct.net\/herheart\/icelandic-gene-discovery-help-fight-heart-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Icelandic gene discovery to help in fight against heart disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Photo: Iceland Monitor\/Styrmir K\u00e1ri<\/p>\n<p>A major discovery by Icelandic genomics company DeCode Genetics could lead to new ways of combating coronary artery disease.<\/p>\n<p>The DeCode team have discovered a rare inactive variant of the ASGR1 gene.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing the occurrence of this variant gene with the health records of thousands of people in Iceland and abroad, the team found that the gene considerably reduces non-HDL cholesterol in the blood and reduces the risk of coronary artery disease and heart attacks by 35%.<\/p>\n<p>The Icelandic team\u2019s findings have been published in the <em>New Eng\u00adland Journal of Medic\u00adine<\/em>, and can be read in full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1508419#t=abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. The article states that these findings could potentially lead to new ways of combating coronary artery disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discovery is yet another example of how genetics supports pharmaceuticals,\u201d says DeCode CEO K\u00e1ri Stef\u00e1nsson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings are already being used to develop drugs against such things as osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, migraines and Alzheimer\u2019s.
