Cardiologists have multiple\u00a0ways to treat heart failure, but there\u2019s no treatment at all for the predominant\u00a0type among women, Canada\u2019s first summit<\/a> on women\u2019s heart health heard Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most common type of heart failure, which is increasing, we don\u2019t have a treatment for it,\u201d said\u00a0Sharonne Hayes, a professor of medicine and cardiovascular diseases at the Mayo Clinic. \u201cWe need it, because it\u2019s predominantly a female disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three-day summit, organized by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute<\/a> and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, has brought together \u201csome of the best thought leaders in Canada to focus on the urgent issue of women\u2019s heart health,\u201d said Colleen Johnston, one of the event\u2019s co-chairs.<\/p>\n

Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of women worldwide. One in three will die as a result of heart disease or stroke, but the illnesses often go undetected in women because of gaps in prevention, diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scary truth\u00a0is that although nine in 10 women have at least one risk factor for heart disease and stroke, we perceive it as a less significant health risk \u2014 less significant, frankly, than cancer,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n

Hayes, the summit\u2019s keynote speaker, used the heart failure example to illustrate the research and treatment gaps that still exist for women with heart disease.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, heart failure was\u00a0attributed to a decline in the ability of the heart to pump blood, she said.\u00a0But\u00a0the type most commonly\u00a0seen in women \u2014 known as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction \u2014 is caused by problems\u00a0when the heart relaxes between beats, leading to elevated blood pressures that can cause the heart\u00a0to stiffen.<\/p>\n

In the past, many women who complained of shortness of breath or swelling were told by their doctors that they just needed to get into better shape, because their echocardiograms, a type of ultrasound for the heart, showed no reduction in their heart\u2019s pumping function.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we know it\u2019s a real thing,\u201d Hayes said. But there\u2019s not a single drug that can treat it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019ve got a woman or a man who has reduced heart-pumping function, I have five guideline-based treatments for them, plus a bunch of extras that I can apply if I need them. I\u2019ve got nothing based on guidelines or research for the predominant women-type of heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hayes, who described women\u2019s heart health as a \u201chuge public health issue,\u201d said there are many sex and gender differences in heart disease that have not been explored.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s under-researched and under-funded. It\u2019s a huge cost sink. If we could just prevent or delay it, it would save us money.\u201d<\/p>\n

From 1984 until 2012, more women than men died of cardiovascular disease in the United States, Hayes said. It wasn\u2019t until 2013 that the number of deaths by women fell slightly below those of men.<\/p>\n

While that\u2019s encouraging, increasing rates of obesity and diabetes are threatening to undo that progress, Hayes said.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re at risk. We cannot let our foot off the gas pedal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women, she said, \u201cneed to step up. They need to own this disease. Women\u2019s health should be defined as women\u2019s heart health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Health care providers also need to pitch in, because they haven\u2019t paid enough attention to the heart health of women, she\u00a0said. And governments and society as a whole \u201cneed to value women more and invest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of the solution is for women to value themselves more, as well, Hayes\u00a0said, noting that surveys show women \u2014 in declining order \u2014 rate their children, their home, their pet and their spouse as more important than themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey put themselves last. What we need to do is flip that paradigm, so that women put themselves first, so they can do all those other things.\u201d<\/p>\n
