Should we invent a new name for women\u2019s heart disease? A review on the topic of gender differences in heart disease reminds us what many heart attack survivors already know when it comes to heart attacks, Women are not just small men.<\/p>\n

Standard cardiac\u00a0treatment typically focuses on\u00a0obstructive coronary artery disease, which up to half of women may not ever experience. In obstructive coronary artery disease, The large blood vessels in\u00a0the heart can become blocked through\u00a0atherosclerosis, a condition in which fatty\u00a0cholesterol streaks\u00a0build up in the arteries.<\/p>\n

In fact, the Framingham Risk Score, based on a study of over 5,000 participants (and their descendents)\u00a0followed since 1948, is the traditional measure of heart disease risk, yet\u00a0this scale\u00a0mistakenly classified almost 90% of women as low risk\u00a0\u2013 which is hard to get your brain wrapped around given that\u00a0more women than men die each year from heart disease.<\/p>\n

But in\u00a0small vessel disease, the narrowing of the very small arteries in the heart means they can\u2019t expand properly. As a result, your heart muscles\u00a0don\u2019t get an adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood. This inability to expand is calledendothelial dysfunction. This problem may cause your small vessels to become even smaller when you\u2019re active or under emotional stress. The reduced blood flow through the small blood vessels causes chest pain and other debilitating symptoms similar to those you\u2019d have if you were having a heart attack.<\/p>\n

For many women, their biggest cardiac\u00a0issue is not a coronary artery blockage, but\u00a0this reduction in blood flow, called\u00a0ischemia, in those very small arteries of the heart, says\u00a0Dr. C. Noel Bairey Merz, director of the Women\u2019s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

She is the lead author of a review on this topic\u00a0published in the\u00a0Journal of the American College of Cardiology.\u00a0Dr. Bairey Merz\u00a0told Health News reporterKathleen Doheny\u00a0of WebMD:<\/p>\n

\u201dWomen, particularly at midlife, ages 45 to 65, are more likely to have abnormalities of the function of the small arteries \u2013 blood vessels so small that you do not even see them on the traditional diagnostic angiogram. Women patients\u00a0are more likely to be falsely reassured \u2013\u00a0when in fact there really\u00a0is a problem.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Bairey Merz and her colleagues even propose that the term coronary heart disease<\/strong> or CHD be used when the problem is obstructed major coronary vessels, but that the termischemic heart disease<\/strong> or IHD be used when the problem is reduced blood flow because of small artery problems.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Mayo Clinic<\/a>\u00a0cardiologists:<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall artery disease symptoms may be hard to uncover. If you\u2019ve been treated for coronary artery disease with angioplasty and stents, but your signs and symptoms persist, you may also have ischemic heart disease.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Up\u00a0to 50% of women with heart disease don\u2019t fit the typical male CHD pattern, and instead have ischemic heart disease, says Dr. Bairey Merz.<\/p>\n
